The global network Rethinking Economics is fighting for a new way of teaching and practicing economics.
The climate crisis, pandemics, and growing global inequality demonstrate the urgency for change. But where should change start?
For Rethinking Economics (REI), a global network of students and organisers, the answer is clear: they see the root of the problem primarily in the way economics is taught at universities. As Kate Raworth, professor of economics and founder of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) stated, academics are "...too often constrained by the narrow restrictions of the current curriculum… we believe it's time for a new starting point."
Over the past decade, REI have built a student led movement to challenge, interrogate and renew the discipline of economics and related fields at universities worldwide. REI’s goal is to equip as many students as possible with skills and competencies to contribute to shaping economies fit for people and planet.
Together with DEAL, one of alv's long-standing partners, REI put together doughnut economics teaching resources and a campaign pack in several languages. The team has now embarked on a campaign across European universities mentoring local REI groups to push for the addition of Doughnut Economics as a core economics module in their degree.
All with the conviction that change is possible!
